"I'd put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don't have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that."

Photovoltaic Farms

Farms in most instances have large barn roofs and this is the ideal application for PV. The majority of barn roofs will easily fit anything between 10kWp and 50kWp.

Farms can of course also opt for ground arrays like Germany. However due to the much stricter planning rules enforced in the UK very few of these arrays are being passed. They are also more expensive and take up land that could otherwise be farmed. So if possible, the best option will be to fit the array directly to the roof.

The government have also fast tracked a review (February 2011) of any arrays over 50kWp. Ground arrays above this level are unlikely to be cost effective, so depending on the outcome of the review ground arrays over 50kWp will cease.

We have recently installed a 9.87kWp PV array on a barn roof near Wantage (pictured above). Please see Mr and Mrs Chandler case study for the result.
